Therefore, Art, would a reasonable conclusion be that to get the best image, one would use the highest resolution lens possible, regardless of its inherent low contrast, and then restore the snap to the image by grading for greater contrast in post?

Isn't that one reason that we like to crush our blacks in post?  To make the image appear sharper as well as more cinematic?
